This story is not about just one team,
but about a boy that represents for me all that Special Olympics is.
Nahum
is from Honduras, like the rest of his team.
He plays
goalie. |
Nahum
has Down's syndrome and stutters most of the time when
he talks. |
He loves to talk about sports, especially soccer. He knows the name of
every soccer player on the professional Latin American teams, and remembers
the important dates, places and goals of the past ten years. World cups,
important games or small ones, he always enjoys the game. He dreams of
being a soccer player but knows that he's not fast enough to be the goalie
for the professional Honduran team. |
Let
the games begin. |
I
saw him play, I saw him win and lose. I saw him laugh and sometimes cry.
Everyone was having fun. |
After
watching and cheering for awhile, I hear disturbing commentary from those
around me. "Win or lose, play or not, doesn't seem like there's a
difference." - somebody says. |
Othe
people ask, "Are they aware of what is going on?" "Do they
know why they're here?"
"Is this just a big trip to amuse them?" |
The
day arrives.
The
answer is simple. |
They're
here to play,
and win. |
They
are very aware! |
